BostonWe can finally cross Massachusetts off the list of states that still haven’t figured out mixed martial arts is a real sport.

Earlier today, Gov. Deval Patrick signed a bill into law that will allow the Department of Public Safety to oversee regulation in Massachusetts. The Massachusetts Boxing Commission will now become the Massachusetts State Athletic Commission which will regulate both boxing and MMA.

Dana White is thrilled he can finally bring the UFC to his hometown of Boston, and intends to stage an event there as soon as next summer.

Dana White, the President of the UFC®, who grew up in Boston, expressed the reaction of many fans as well when the legislation passed, “I am so pumped that the UFC®  is finally coming to Massachusetts.  I guarantee that we will put on an incredible UFC® event for Boston in 2010” he said.

The first UFC® fight in Massachusetts could be held as early as Summer 2010.

Two things are all but guaranteed. The UFC is coming to Boston next year and Kenny Florian will be on the card. The question is, which venue will they hold it at? The Garden or will they go big at Fenway Park?

Update: The UFC’s Marc Ratner says they are targeting a July or August event at The Garden. Fenway Park is still a consideration for a future event but they won’t hold one there in 2010.
