If you didn’t know, the Steve Cantwell vs. Vladimir Matyushenko fight scheduled for UFC 108 has been canceled due to an undisclosed problem with Cantwell. Details have been scarce, but according to Dana White, the issue is so serious Cantwell may never fight again.
“Cantwell has some medical problems, and he might not ever fight again,” White said, declining to elaborate on the fighter’s problem.
What’s odd about this is Cantwell’s management issued a statement yesterday saying it’s only a minor issue and Cantwell was continuing to prepare as if he were still fighting Saturday night.
“Steve Cantwell is not officially off the card. There has been a minor issue and we hope it will be resolved in the morning. Steve is still training and preparing for the bout.”
Furthermore, Dave Meltzer’s latest Yahoo! Sports’ piece says a cut suffered in training was the culprit, which is hardly a reason for a fighter’s career to be jeopardized.
I really don’t want to speculate, but let’s just hope for Cantwell’s sake it’s not what it sounds like.
By the way, with all the fighters attached to UFC 108 at one point or another who have withdrawn with illnesses and injuries, guess who else suffered a injury in training? Joe Silva. At least he doesn’t have to find a replacement for himself.
