With a middleweight title fight already booked for August, it appears Strikeforce is moving forward with plans to hold a two-night, eight-man middleweight tournament that will kick off in October and conclude in December.
“We always felt that crowning a champion would be the first priority,” said Coker. “We will host a tournament in October. It looks like the first round will take place then, which will lead to the final four in December.”
Coker said the promotion has initial plans to run the semi-finals and finals in one evening this December.
One of the challenges Strikeforce faces is finding an athletic commission that will allow semi-final and final bouts in the same night. Texas wouldn’t allow them to do it because of rules set forth from outlawing Toughman contests, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t other states that would. Arizona is allowing Strikeforce to run a one-night women’s tournament in August, and Strikeforce ran a one-night, four-man tournament in California in 2007. In other words, Strikeforce has options assuming they can get the fighters to agree to it as well.
Possible participants named in the report include:

He wasn’t mentioned, but Scott Smith also wants in on the action.
