Chael Sonnen wasn’t the only fighter who laid it on thick this past week. James Toney brought his own brand of trash talk to the MMA interwebs starting with a live fan Q&A with MMA Fighting. Here’s a sampling of how the chat went.

If you win does that prove boxing is better than mixed martial arts?

No doubt. It’s already known that boxing is better than MMA but I’ll prove that and that James Toney is the best fighter no matter if it’s boxing or MMA.

What will happen when Randy takes you down???

If Randy takes me to the ground he’s going to have to worry. I’m not the one who’s worried about that. I guarantee you, Randy is worried. I’m not losing sleep on Randy Couture but I guarantee when he goes to sleep, he’s thinking about me. People seem like they’re forgetting that the fight starts standing up.

How high do you rate Randy’s striking?

He’s pretty good for a girl. He’s got the balls to fight me but there’s no MMA fighter who has the balls to trade punches with me. If they do it’s suicide. If Randy tries to grab me I’ll hit him so hard his grandparents will feel it. I keep reminding everybody, the fight starts standing up. To shoot you have to get close and when you do, you’re going to get hurt. I’m in the business of hurting people and that’s what I’m planning on doing.

Hey James, First off I think it’s awesome that your jumping on the UFC bandwagon, I know you will dominate. My question for you is, coming into UFC is there a certain person that you would have rather fought than Couture?

The person I wanted to fight right off the bat was Brock Lesnar. He’s a champion, I’m a champion and I wanted to do it. But they said I couldn’t do that. Then they said, “How about Kimbo?” But I said, “That’s too easy. That’s like kicking a little kid’s butt.” But then Randy started saying he wanted to fight me, so I said, “OK, you’re the first one getting it.”

James what will be your strategy when randy pins you against the cage and controls your arms so you can’t throw knockout punches? Also, after having not fought in a cage before do you feel that the cage could be a game changer for you?

I’m in a cage every day. I train in a cage every day. If Randy wants to hold me against the cage, he can’t do it. I’m tougher than he is. Randy is fragile… People think Randy is a God in the MMA world, but in the boxing world he’d be considered a journeyman, a bum. How many knockouts does he have, nine or 10? And people think he’s a Hall of Famer? In a real sport you’ve got to be retired before you’re in the Hall of Fame? When I fight Randy he won’t be Hall of Fame, he’ll be Hall of Shame.

After you lose do you plan on apologizing for all the disrespect you’ve shown?

Kiss my behind. Other people should be apologizing to me.

Toney also mentioned he has 3-5 fights on his contract, and his plan is to fight again in October followed by a title fight against Brock Lesnar in the new year.

Toney turned it up later in the week on MMA Weekly radio. You see Toney’s not worried about defending the takedown, he’s worried about going to jail for killing Randy Couture with 4oz. gloves.

“Everybody asks how are you going to defend the takedown. I’m not worried about that. How are you going to defend these punches? I’m going from 10-ounce gloves to four-ounce gloves,” Toney commented to “If I hit someone with four-ounce gloves, oh my goodness, me and my crew might go to jail for homicide.”

And once again, Toney questioned Couture’s “legend” status.

“A legend?” questioned the multi-division boxing titleholder. “I’m a legend. As a matter of fact, I’m a legend of my time. I’ve been in the game 25 years. I’ve had 84 pro fights. How can he be a legend with 28 fights? Come on dog.

“Come on man, give me a break,” he quipped. “It makes me want to throw up. A legend like Randy Couture? You guys need to stop talking about the legendary Randy Couture and better start talking about the legendary James Toney, the greatest fighter ever put on the planet. Period.”

“They act like Randy Couture is fighting some bum off the streets. I tell you what, like I said, everybody pay their $49.95 on Aug. 28. Tune in and don’t be late. And if you are late, the lights might be out.”

Randy Couture wasn’t the only victim of Toney’s verbal assaults this past week. Jon Jones made himself a target when he told Tapout Radio how he really felt about Toney and his gameplan for fending off takedown attempts.

“Do you really think you’re going to uppercut a collegiate wrestler when he’s coming full force into a double leg dive? I think he [James Toney] is just really naive to think that with hand combinations alone, he’s going to be able to defend takedowns from the clinch and double leg dives, so I think he’s just ignorant in a way and I don’t really have a hard time calling him ignorant because of some of the statements he’s made about our sport.”

Not surprisingly, Toney didn’t exactly take his remarks as constructive criticism.

“Jon ‘Homo’ Jones better do his research before he talks shit about me. He doesn’t know anything about me. He’s about to learn though because when I see Jon Jones, I’ma slap his ass. I don’t play those games. He better learn how to fight before he talks shit about me. My debut fight in the UFC is against a Hall of Famer. Who the fuck did he fight in his first fight in the UFC? [Andre Gusmao] Isn’t he like 22? He better go find some tapes of me because I’m not the one to fuck with and he gonna see that when I bump into his ass. keep my name out your mouth boy… Jones is the 2010 Rampage Jackson; both straight up yes men. Tell him to go drink an Ecstasy drink because I heard that’s what he likes to do; just another bitch ass New Yorker.”

Too bad Toney isn’t fighting at 205. Toney-Jones would be fun to watch. Actually, too bad Toney isn’t fighting at 185. The pre-fight hype between James Toney and Chael Sonnen would be epic. Seriously, the internet would explode if those two verbal freight trains ever collided.

Update: Sounds like Toney’s comments got back around to Jones. After beating Vladimir Matyushenko, Jon Jones told the media he would move up to heavyweight to fight James Toney.

“Randy Couture, he bumps up to heavyweight all the time, and he always looks very impressive against the slower guy. And now I actually have a heavyweight that I wouldn’t mind fighting. That’s James Toney – ‘Mr. I’m going to slap Jon in the face.’ I’d bump up for that fight any day.”
