You may have heard, MC Hammer has entered the MMA management business, and already has several notable fighters signed to his Alchemist Management firm, including Nate Marquardt, Vladimir Matyushenko, Tim Kennedy, Jorge Rivera, Jared Hamman, Antoni Hardonk and James McSweeney. Hammer sat down with MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour earlier today to talk about why he decided to get into MMA.
“It’s just over the years I watched the world of MMA grow. It’s really exciting. I don’t see anything more exciting today than MMA and it got my fire stoked… Myself I’ve been a fan of pro sports going all the way back to the 70s. Of course everything from professional baseball to being involved with some representation of athletes in football to being involved with Evander Holyfield and managing him to the championship in boxing.”
Hammer has a team to handle the day-to-day operations of managing and marketing the fighters, while he’ll be using his connections in the music and movies industries to help secure sponsorship and marketing deals for his clients. If nothing else though, he certainly has the life experience to advise his clients on how to handle any fame and fortune that comes their way, or more importantly, how not to handle it.
Interesting fact: MC Hammer is now the only person in MMA to have more Twitter followers than Dana White (1.89 million > 1.14 million).
