Everyone has been wondering who’s next for Jon Jones and when he might get a light heavyweight title shot. Jones answered both those questions this past weekend on Inside MMA. Transcription via MMA Mania:
“Right now I’m waiting for Ryan Bader and Lil’ Nog to fight each other and I’ll fight the winner of that, and I’m predicting that I’m about two fights away from a title shot. I had a meeting with Dana and Lorenzo and that’s kind of where were going with it. They didn’t really say two fights. They said you know, you beat the winner of Bader/Lil’ Nog, we’ll give you one more fight. We’ll see you know how you win the fights, depending on the fashion of the finish, then you know, we’ll give you a title shot.”
Sounds like a plan to me. If Jones can run through the Nogueira-Bader winner and follow that up with a win against a big name like Rampage Jackson, Lyoto Machida or Randy Couture, I say give the man his title shot.
Keep in mind though we’re probably looking at another 12 months or so before the next light heavyweight title fight after Shogun Rua vs. Rashad Evans. Dana White has repeatedly said Shogun-Evans isn’t going down till late Spring/early Summer, so we’re probably looking at around this time next year for the one after that. As quickly as things change in this sport, who knows what the title picture will look like by then, but I’m looking forward to seeing how it all plays out.
