Not that it wasn’t already clear, but Jon Fitch’s next fight won’t be for the UFC welterweight championship. According to MMA Junkie, Fitch will take on Jake Ellenberger at UFC 126.
A welterweight matchup between perennial contender Jon Fitch (23-3 MMA, 13-1 UFC) and Jake Ellenberger (23-5 MMA, 2-1 UFC) is on tap for UFC 126’s pay-per-view card.
Sources close to the event today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that at least one fighter has agreed to the fight and that bout agreements are in the process of being finalized.
It’s kind of an unexpected match-up, but news that bodes well for Jake Shields’ title shot chances. In fact, it’s looking more and more like Dana White will keep his word and give Shields the next welterweight title shot. For one, a fight against Fitch made the most sense for Shields if he wasn’t going to fight for a title next, but clearly that’s not the direction the UFC chose to go in. And two, as most number one contenders do, Shields will be sitting cageside for Georges St. Pierre vs. Josh Koscheck at UFC 124. Plus, he seems to be under the impression they’re still giving it to him despite his lackluster debut. It’s not confirmation from Dana himself, but all signs are pointing in that direction.
