Remember when the UFC booked Jon Fitch vs. Jake Ellenberger for UFC 126 and everyone threw up their arms in a collective WTF??? Yeah, well, I guess the UFC wasn’t so crazy about that match-up themselves because after BJ Penn blasted Matt Hughes tonight they decided to scrap Fitch-Ellenberger and book Fitch against Penn at UFC 127 in Australia instead.
On the heels of BJ Penn’s quick and decisive win over Matt Hughes at UFC 123 on Saturday night, UFC president Dana White said he’s already picked Penn’s next opponent.
After the post-fight press conference, White told a small group of reporters that Penn will stay at welterweight and will next face Jon Fitch at UFC 127 in Sydney, Australia, on February 26.
“I already made the fight,” White said. “Him and Fitch in Sydney.”
While there are surely others in the welterweight title hunt, could Fitch-Penn be a welterweight title eliminator? Eh, maybe, maybe not. All Dana would say is the winner will be “in the mix.”
As for Jake Ellenberger, he’ll get a new opponent for UFC 126.
Fitch-Penn isn’t the only fight Dana booked for Sydney either. Another big UFC 123 winner, George Sotiropoulos, will take on Dennis Siver in a lightweight bout. Dana didn’t say but you have to imagine the winner of that fight could find their way into “the mix” as well.
