There seems to be a lot of controversy surrounding the decision in the UFC on Versus 3 main event. Fans seems to be passionately split on who deserved to win between Diego Sanchez and Martin Kampmann. I personally scored the second and third rounds for Diego Sanchez, but I could definitely see the win going to Kampmann too. It was just a close fight.

I’m not sure how much weight should placed on these stats considering how the fight played out, but for what it’s worth, both FightMetric and CompuStrike report that Kampmann outstruck Sanchez by a definitive margin.

  • Total Strikes: 79 (K) – 51 (S)
  • Significant Strikes: 77 (K) – 51 (S)
  • Sanchez takedowns: 1 – 15 attempts

  • Total Strikes: 97 (K) – 45 (S)
  • Power Strikes: 50 (K) – 39 (S)
  • Sanchez takedowns: 1 – 15 attempts

It’s also worth noting however that wide margin was large in part due to the great first round Kampmann had. The stats were much closer in the second and third rounds.

Update: Regardless of who won or should have won, both their bank accounts won big. Dana White initially bumped their Fight of the Night bonuses from $40,000 to $60,000, but then reconsidered and threw in an extra $100,000 for a total of $160,000 each.

“I don’t forget fights like that,” White told Yahoo! Sports. “That was an unbelievable fight. That was the kind of fight you saw back in the 1980s in boxing, a classic war. Diego Sanchez is one of the toughest [expletives] I’ve ever seen, man. It was a dogfight. They both gave every ounce of what they had. Kampmann got a loss on his record, but he didn’t lose that fight. There are no losers when you’re in a fight like that.”
