It’s not often a fighter gets a major step up in competition coming off a loss, but that’s exactly what Lyle Beerbohm is getting at Strikeforce April 9 event.

MMA-Japan first reported today that “Fancy Pants” will square off against Mr. Magic Grappling Pants Shinya Aoki at Strikeforce “Diaz vs. Daley.” Sherdog confirmed the report and learned the fight will take place on the televised portion of the card despite initial rumblings that it wouldn’t.

It’s definitely a tough fight for Beerbohm. He most recently competed in an epic grappling battle with Pat Healy at Strikeforce Challengers 13, but ultimately came up short on the judge’s scorecards. Beerbohm has recorded 7 submission victories in his 16-fight career, but against Aoki, he may be best served to avoid the ground game altogether.

Meanwhile, Aoki is coming off an embarrassing loss to Yuichiro Nagashima in a K-1/MMA mixed rules bout at last year’s Dynamite show. You know, the one where he repeatedly flopped to the ground in the K-1 round, then obliterated his face on Nagashima’s knee in the opening seconds of the MMA round. Yeah, that one. I’m sure Aoki welcomes the opportunity to fight a less accomplished grappler in his Strikeforce return.
