A September Strikeforce event is beginning to take shape. Over the weekend, Strikeforce mistakenly announced a middleweight title fight between champion Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza and Luke Rockhold for their July 30 “Fedor vs. Henderson” card. The fight is still happening, but is planned for a September 10 show instead.

The date for the fight was confirmed to MMAWeekly.com by sources close to the match-up on Sunday. Rockhold also announced the fight via his Twitter account.

“I feel healthy, I feel ready, and I feel I have all the tools to take his belt. It’s on,” Rockhold wrote.

It’s a heck of an opportunity for Rockhold. He’s getting a title shot coming off wins against Paul Bradley, Jesse Taylor, Cory Devela, Buck Meredith, Nik Theotikos and Josh Neal in his three-year Strikeforce career. It’s not exactly the type of competition that typically earns you a title shot, but I doubt Rockhold is complaining. The belt itself doesn’t mean very much but it’s an opportunity to make a name for himself before Strikeforce inevitably folds into the UFC.

Jacare vs. Rockhold isn’t the only fight penciled in for the Sept. 10 card. Sengoku lightweight standout Maximo Blanco recently signed with Strikeforce and is expected to make his debut against Josh Thomson on the card.
