Alistair Overeem will fight in October after all, but it won’t be for Strikeforce. Instead, Overeem will compete in Golden Glory’s 2011 Glory World Series event in Moscow, Russia. MMA Fighting confirmed the news:
Glory World Series released a poster on Wednesday for their upcoming October event, and front and center was the Strikeforce heavyweight champion. MMA Fighting then confirmed with Martijn de Jong, Overeem’s trainer at Golden Glory and Glory World Series promoter, that “The Reem” will in fact be fighting on the card.
“No opponent named yet but probably a MMA match,” de Jong said.
Overeem’s Golden Glory teammate, Sergei Kharitonov, is also featured on the poster, but it’s unclear if he will fight on the card as well. He’s currently scheduled to meet Josh Barnett on Sept. 10 in the Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix, so that fight will presumably influence Kharitonov’s level of involvement.
News for another prominent heavyweight also broke today. ProElite released the poster for their comeback card on August 27 and in turn revealed Andrei Arlovski’s opponent. “The Pitbull” will take on Ray Lopez in the main event. Lopez only has seven professional fights, but he’s coming off a 75-second TKO victory and has pro boxing experience. Sounds like a potentially dangerous fight for Arlovski.
