UFC on FUEL 3 has a main event.
The UFC announced today that a featherweight bout between Dustin Poirier and Chan Sung Jung, aka The Korean Zombie, will headline the May 15 card in Fairfax, Virginia.
“The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung takes on Dustin “The Diamond” Poirier in a three-round main event, set for May 15th in Fairfax, VA.
Jung, widely regarded as one of the most exciting fighters in the sport, is coming off the 2nd-fastest KO in UFC history and pulled off the submission of the year for 2011. Poirier is the division’s fastest-rising star, and known for his relentless power punching style, but his last two outings have earned him spectacular submission wins. He remains undefeated at featherweight.
I’m not sure if the fight was already in the works or not (probably was), but Poirier and Jung exchanged words on Twitter earlier this week. Either way, they got the fight and it should be a good one. Considering the complete lack of featherweight title challengers for Jose Aldo, I’m inclined to think the winner may very well find himself in the title picture, if not the number one contender’s spot.
By the way, there seems to be some confusion about which channel this card will air on. This is the same card Thiago Silva is fighting on which has been reported as UFC on FX 3 up to this point, but the UFC is calling it UFC on FUEL 3. Hopefully there will be some clarification soon.
One more thing, next week’s UFC on FUEL 1 card will stream live on UFC.com, according to the UFC’s UK Twitter feed. I’m not sure if the stream will be geographically restricted to the UK only or if those of us in the US will be able to get it as well. My guess is the former unfortunately, but hopefully there will be more info next week on alternative viewing methods for those of us who don’t get FUEL.
Update: It’s looking like the May 15 card is going to be UFC on FUEL 3 and not UFC on FX 3.
