It has finally been announced. Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen have signed on to square off in the main event of UFC 147 on June 23 from Joao Havelange Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, the UFC announced in an official release on Monday, complete with a bold statement from UFC president Dana White.

This will be the biggest sporting event of the year. Bigger than the NFL, the NBA, you name it – UFC 147 will be the biggest. The whole world wants to see this fight between Silva and Sonnen. We are broadcast in over 150 countries in 22 languages in half a billion homes. Wherever those fans are, they are going to be watching this fight.

Silva and Sonnen faced off in 2010, with Silva claiming a victory via submission in the fifth round. Sonnen was dominating “The Spider” through the first four rounds, but Silva locked up the submission to remain champion.

Vitor Belfort and Wanderlei Silva, who are currently coaching on The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil, was also made official for the event.

Ticket information is expected to be announced, along with more fights, next month by the UFC. Tickets are expected to go on sale in May.
