Thiago Alves was well on his way to securing a victory over Martin Kampmann earlier this year when he shot in for a takedown, got caught in a choke, and was submitted by “The Hitman.”
The quick-change in events stunned those watching the fight, and left Alves searching for answers in the moments after it all went down.
During a recent appearance on MMA Junkie’s Radio show, Alves discussed what happened in those closing moments of the fire, and added that he has since stopped working with the cornerman that called for the takedown.
I didn’t know how bad (Kampmann) was hurt. When you’re fighting, you’re in the zone. You just react to stuff, and my cornerman was like, ‘Takedown, takedown, takedown.’ I went for it and just made a mistake. I’ve got to trust the people outside the corner. That’s what they’re there for.
Currently, Alves is awaiting word on his next opponent. He mentioned Diego Sanchez as someone he’d like to fight, but Sanchez is rehabbing from surgery.
The loss to Kampmann hurt Alves in terms of standing in the UFC’s welterweight division, as Kampmann is now in a possible No. 1 contender match with Jake Ellenberger, while Alves is on the outside looking in. What he does in his next fight could ultimately determine his future inside the Octagon.
