Anthony Pettis has been called the No. 1 contender to the UFC lightweight title twice now. However, after Saturday night, it appears Pettis has been overtaken once again.

Nate Diaz became the first fighter to submit Jim Miller in the main event of UFC on FOX 3, and UFC president Dana White said Diaz would take the opportunity to be the next man to compete for the belt after champion Benson Henderson defends his crown against Frankie Edgar.

Pettis, who is currently out with an injury, talked to FUEL TV about fighting Diaz to name a No. 1 contender to the 155-pound strap.

Let’s do it. Nate Diaz thinks he’s the No. 1 contender, I think I’m the No. 1 contender. Let’s figure out who the real No. 1 contender is. I’ll make sure I’m ready to fight around September. I haven’t had a clear shot to the UFC title until now, so I’m going to take advantage of this. I think I match up great with (Diaz).

Pettis seemed to earn himself a second fight with Henderson after defeating Joe Lauzon. However, the Henderson-Edgar match was so close, a rematch was granted for “The Answer.”

“Showtime” defeated Henderson when both men were competing for the WEC, claiming the WEC lightweight title. While White did say Diaz would wait for a shot at the belt, maybe his mind can be changed to face off with Pettis.
