Many see UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos as nothing more than a boxer. And, while “Cigano” is a tremendously gifted boxer, training partner Antonio Silva is letting it be known that JDS does have other skills.
“I’d say ‘Cigano’s a brown or black belt at jiu-jitsu,” said Silva, in a recent interview with the Brazilian news outlet Tatame. “He’s very good, fast, versatile, and doesn’t get stuck on the positions; he can move fast and stand up quickly. Every time he’s in Rio (de Janeiro, Brazil), he trains much jiu-jitsu.”
Dos Santos will likely need those skills if he is unable to knock Frank Mir out early when the two collide in the main event of UFC 146 for the heavyweight belt. Mir is a talented submission grappler, having defeated Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in his most recent bout via submission.
Silva feels like Mir will get, “frustrated and won’t handle it well,” when it comes to trying to submit dos Santos.
