The Nevada Athletic Commission handed down a severe penalty to Nick Diaz recently, as the fighter was suspended for a year and fined a percentage of his last fight purse.

Among those surprised by the findings was Frank Mir, who will compete in Las Vegas this Saturday night against Junior dos Santos for the UFC heavyweight title at UFC 146.

Mir believed Diaz was going to walk away from his meeting with NAC clear to compete again. That, however, wasn’t the case, as Mir discussed with Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting.

From what I understood leading into it, I thought it was an out-of-contest drug, to have metabolites in your system. He has a prescription for it back home, from how I understand it. Obviously, having metabolites in his system means he was not under the influence of marijuana in contest, the night they tested him, but that’s why they wear suits and I wear no shirt when I go to work. I thought he was in the clear but I was wrong. (It) is very scary and the fact they are who they are and I fight here in Nevada, whatever they wanna do is fine by me! Seems very fair!

Mir will be looking to claim the UFC heavyweight belt once again in his career, while dos Santos will be making his first title defense.
