Former two-time UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir was unable to wrestle the belt away from Junior dos Santos Saturday night at UFC 146.

While dos Santos seemed to pick Mir apart with his boxing and hands, it was another part of “Cigano’s” body that impressed Mir the most.

“His hand speed wasn’t that surprising; it was his foot speed that was,” said Mir, during a post-fight interview on FUEL TV. “A few times I tried to get in there and engage, and fight on my terms, (but) he was able to get out. He landed more shots than I did.”

Mir was looking to join Randy Couture as the only three-time UFC heavyweight champions. After surviving an onslaught of punches to end the first, JDS went right back on the attack in the second, putting Mir away for the night.

“He caught my ear and I got wobbly and then he got me with a straight shot to the chin,” Mir said. “He was able to come in and out and throw a few shots and jump back. I should have laid into the kicks a little more. Dos Santos is the champ for a reason.”

Mir failed to mention a choice for his next fight, instead saying he would go back and spend time with his family before returning to the gym.
