Fabricio Werdum knows he will have the weight of the world on his shoulders when he steps inside the Octagon to face Mike Russow at UFC 147 on June 23 from Brazil.
Along with being the favorite, Werdum will also be competing in front of his native country. That, however, is only helping to fuel him for the fight.
“I have good motivation for a fight in Brazil,” said Werdum, in a recent interview with the UFC. “This fight is a big difference for me and my goal is the belt.”
Werdum defeated Roy Nelson in his return fight to the UFC after competing in Strikeforce. He knows another strong showing could vault him right to the top of the heavyweight division for a crack at UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos.
“Just one punch, or one kick, can finish a fight. (Russow) has a strong punch for sure…the heavyweight division is very dangerous,” Werdum said. “Everyone has heavy hands and can finish a fight like that.”
Russow has not lost since 2007, but Werdum said, “if he jst gives me one opportunity, I’ll finish the fight.”
