When word came out that UFC president Dana White wanted Glover Teixeira to step in and face Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, it seemed inevitable that the much would happen.

However, Rua and his camp decided against it and Brandon Vera was inserted into the contest. The bout became the main event of UFC on FOX 4 on August 4, and everyone went on their happy way.

Questions, though, remained for Rua. Why did he decline fighting Teixeira? Did he actually say he would rather be cut than face him? Well, over the weekend, FUEL TV caught up with the former UFC light heavyweight champion and found out the answers.

I never said that (I would rather be cut). My team and I talked and decided that Glover is a guy who has just entered the UFC and we figured out that it was not a good fight for us. My No. 1 goal is the belt, so I want to fight guys who put me back on track for the belt like ‘Rampage’ Jackson. Brandon Vera is a guy who is very famous, so a win over him would put me back on track.

Rua will be fighting for the first time since a loss to Dan Henderson late in 2011 that many called the Fight of the Year.
