UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva didn’t get upset or frustrated when Chael Sonnen came flying in and scored a takedown just seconds into their fight Saturday night at UFC 148: Silva vs. Sonnen 2.
No, “The Spider” expected that. Instead, he avoided any serious damage, jumped to his feet after the round, and planned his attack.
Just a few minutes later, Silva was standing again, this time having his hand raised as the winner following a dominating performance over Sonnen.
“Chael came prepared, he came flying out and did what he does best which is take me down,” Silva said. “I was prepared for that. The difference was I was not hurt this time.”
After the two met in 2010, a fight Silva won via submission in the fifth after losing the first four rounds, Silva claimed to have suffered a broken rib in training. Many of those closest to him advised him not to fight, but “The Spider” didn’t listen.
With the win, Silva cements his status as the best fighter in the world. He has defended his UFC middleweight title 10 times now, a record for the promotion.
