It appears that Frank Mir will be the one to help Daniel Cormier close out the Strikeforce heavyweight division, as a report by USA Today confirmed that Mir and Cormier will collide later this year.
Cormier was originally set to fight on the same September card as Gilbert Melendez-Pat Healy for the Strikeforce lightweight title, but now it appears that Cormier-Mir will go down in either October or November as the main event for another Showtime card.
“There has been a lot of speculation as to who Cormier would fight next, and this is the fight that makes the most sense,” UFC president Dana White said. “Cormier is one of the best heavyweights in the world. He needs to fight opponents of that caliber, and Frank Mir is that guy.”
Mir’s agent, Malki Kawa, posted on Twitter for his fighter, saying, “that he’s very excited about this opportunity and is very grateful to the UFC for making this fight happen.”
Mir lost to UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos earlier this year in his quest to wear the belt for a third time. Cormier is undefeated, including a victory in the finals of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix.
