Vitor Belfort nearly sent the MMA world into a state of shock Saturday night.
Belfort locked UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones in a deep armbar and started cranking on the long, right arm of Jones.
However, before he could get the submission victory, “Bones” had escaped. Jones went on to secure a submission win of his own in the fourth round at UFC 152.
“When I heard his arm pop, I let go a little and that is where he escaped,” said Belfort, during an interview on Fuel TV following the loss. “I made a mistake. He is a great fighter and I lost the opportunity.”
Belfort continued to look for the submission several times during the fight, but was never able to lock it in as tight as he did in the first. “The Phenom” also said in the post-fight interview that Jones kicked him in the rib area, which he injured in training.
