Jake Ellenberger knew what he needed to do Friday night at UFC on FX 5 vs. Jay Hieron.

While Hieron had the momentum of previously defeating Ellenberger on his side, Ellenberger understood that he needed to avoid a second consecutive loss in the deep UFC welterweight division.

So, he stayed true to what got him to the UFC and found a way to earn a decision over Hieron.

“It’s hard to get a game plan on (Hieron),” said Ellenberger, during the post-fight show on Fuel TV. “He is a good fighter. He has had a lot of good fights. I had to fight smart and I got the win.”

Ellenberger added that avenging the loss to Hieron – which was his first pro defeat – was important, saying, “Yeah, he is a dangerous guy, so I’ve got to do what I’ve got to do to win.” He didn’t make any push for a future opponent, but when Josh Koscheck was brought up, Ellenberger seemed happy with that.

The two were expected to meet at UFC 151 before Koscheck was injured and the card was cancelled completely.

“Yeah, (Koscheck) is up there,” Ellenberger said. “He is dangerous and a veteran, and I’m up for it.”
