Vinny Magalhaes worked with Chael Sonnen prior to Sonnen’s recent UFC middleweight title fight with Anderson Silva.

While Sonnen was unable to take out Silva, Magalhaes believes his “student” can lock in a submission in his next fight.

Sonnen is expected to meet UFC 205-pound champion Jon Jones in April after the two compete on the next season of The Ultimate Fighter. Magalhaes, in an interview with MMA Prime, discussed Sonnen’s chances vs. “Bones.”

After watching Jon’s last fight (a win over Vitor Belfort), I feel Chael is likely to submit Jones. Jones has excellent overall game, is an incredible athlete; (but) his ground (game) is a little suspect.

Magalhaes pointed to a deep armbar that Belfort locked on early in the bout. Jones admitted that it was a tough submission, but said afterwards that he would have let his arm break before submitting. Still, it did show a weakness in his game.

“He got caught in an armbar by a guy who is now known to have great jiu-jitsu, even in MMA. I don’t think Jones could handle a guy with incredible guard. I’m going to work on that with Chael.”

Sonnen (27-12-1) will be fighting at light heavyweight for the first time in several years after receiving two chances at Silva’s belt. Jones (17-1) has defended his title four times since defeating Mauricio “Shogun” Rua.
