A shoulder injury has knocked Chris Weidman out of a planned encounter with Tim Boetsch at UFC 155. The two middleweights were expected to compete in a key contest to potentially determine a contender in the division.

Instead, Weidman’s teammate, Costa Philippou, will tackle Boetsch on December 29. The two train together at Serra-Longo.

Philippou has won four consecutive fights, but was recently removed from UFC 154 after Nick Ring came down with an illness.

Weidman, meanwhile, torn is labrum and may require surgery. It’s been a long few months for “The All-American,” as he had his house nearly destroyed during Superstorm Sandy.
