UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones does not view Chael Sonnen as the No. 1 contender to his title. In fact, “Bones” probably doesn’t have Sonnen anywhere within the Top-10.
Nevertheless, the two – who are currently filming The Ultimate Fighter series – will compete in early 2013 for the belt.
Sonnen, who was last seen in action falling to UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva, was willing to accept a short notice fight with Jones earlier this year. That, and his ability to sell a fight, helped place him in a 205-pound title match inside the Octagon despite not competing in that division for several years.
“Chael definitely doesn’t deserve to fight me, and everybody sees that,” said Jones, during a recent interview with MMAjunkie.com. “As long as people see that at the end of the day, I’m happy with that.”
Jones, who has topped former UFC champions such as Vitor Belfort, Rashad Evans, Lyoto Machida and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, believes by taking out Sonnen, he will silence the outspoken fighter once and for all.
A lot of people have said, ‘Why not be the guy to shut him up once and for all? Why not be the guy to make his words very irrelevant once and for all – put a stamp on what Anderson did to him.’ That’s what I’m going to try to do.
Jones is 17-1 in his MMA career and 11-1 inside the Octagon.
