Gilbert Melendez believes a champion vs. champion match between himself and Benson Henderson makes all the sense in the world.
Melendez, the current Strikeforce lightweight champion, is recovering from a shoulder injury. He has been rumored to be in contract negotiations with the UFC, though nothing has been made public yet.
Henderson, the UFC 155-pound champ, recently defeated Nate Diaz, a teammate with Melendez.
“I want to fight Benson Henderson,” said Melendez, in an interview with Bleacher Report. “I think a champion vs. champion fight makes absolute sense right now. I think we already know how things are going to work out between Benson Henderson and a lot of other lightweight fighters in the UFC, but I’m that mystery fighter.”
Melendez has not fought since a win over Josh Thomson this past May. He has not lost since 2008.
“El Nino” added that he doesn’t care if the fight happens inside the Octagon or a Strikeforce cage, though most believe January will be the final event Strikeforce puts on.
