Junior dos Santos will defend his UFC heavyweight title against Cain Velasquez later this month at UFC 155.
And while there is no denying that Velasquez is the better wrestler if the bout goes to the ground, dos Santos wants everyone to know that his mat skills will hold up.
Despite owning 11 knockout victories to his credit, including a number of them early in the first round, dos Santos (15-1) says a submission victory would be just as thrilling for him.
“I train a lot of jiu-jitsu, too, and I can tell you I’m ready to submit someone,” said dos Santos, while appearing on MMAjunkie.com Radio recently. “If the fight goes to the ground and I can’t come back to my feet, I’m going to be looking to submit him.”
Dos Santos dropped Velasquez late in 2011, finishing him off and securing the UFC heavyweight title. He has since defended it successfully vs. Frank Mir.
“I prefer to fight on my feet,” dos Santos said. “Cain is a really good wrestler, and he’s got a good chance to take me down. If he takes me down and holds me there, then you guys will see my jiu-jitsu.”
