Not many people give Dion Staring much of a chance against Daniel Cormier this Saturday night at Strikeforce: Marquardt vs. Saffiedine.

Cormier, a former Olympic wrestler, has shot up the heavyweight rankings thanks to his recent wins over Antonio Silva and Josh Barnett.

However, thanks to his wrestling past, “DC” isn’t overlooking Staring as much as the MMA public is.

“No one expected it to be Dion, but that’s what makes Dion such a dangerous opponent,” said Cormier, while appearing on MMA Weekly Radio recently. “It took no convincing. They offered this guy the fight and he said yes. In his mind, there’s a belief somewhere that he can beat me.”

Cormier is expected to join the ranks of the UFC after the bout, and has targeted Frank Mir as his first Octagon opponent. The two were originally set to met last year, but Mir suffered an injury.

Staring trains with Alistair Overeem and the rest of the Blackzilians in Florida, but has only competed on the regional circuit during his career. He is 26-7 with six consecutive victories, including four by submission.
