In the hours following reports of Eddie Alvarez receiving a large contract to sign with the UFC, current UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson sounded off via Twitter.

Maybe that was all a little ploy by “Smooth,” as he confirmed late Friday night that he has signed a new eight-fight contract with the UFC – and he is a happy man for it.

Henderson has successfully defended his title twice, defeating both Frankie Edgar and Nate Diaz in 2012. He is likely headed for a collision with Gilbert Melendez later this year, though nothing has been confirmed yet.
