UFC president Dana White confirmed following Thursday’s media day that a win for Alistair Overeem Saturday night at UFC 156 will position him for a UFC heavyweight title match later this year.

Overeem faces Antonio Silva in one of the featured bouts, following a lengthy suspension for a failed pre-fight drug test.

Early in 2012, Overeem (36-11) was in line to meet Junior dos Santos for the title, but he tested positive for elevated testosterone and was eventually suspended by the Nevada Athletic Commission for nine months.

Following a win by Cain Velasquez over dos Santos to close out 2012, White seemed to hint at the fact that Overeem would earn the next shot – granted he gets past Silva.

Silva (17-4) does not appear to have the same contender stipulation, but a win over Overeem could vault him right into the top spot. Silva lost to Velasquez last year via TKO.
