UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva is being targeted for a return to the Octagon this July, and his opponent would be Chris Weidman.

The Brazilian news source Tatame reported the bout recently. It would take place from Las Vegas on July 6.

Silva successfully defended his title against Chael Sonnen last year, and also earned a light heavyweight win over Stephan Bonnar.

Weidman has been pushing hard for a bout with “The Spider” since defeating Mark Munoz. He was knocked out of a planned encounter with Tim Boetsch after suffering a training injury.

“We have had some conversations, but still there’s nothing official,” said Dave Martin, who represents Weidman. “We are negotiating, though nothing is confirmed.”

While Weidman would appear to be the consensus top contender to Silva, the extended layoff will not do him any favors against the greatest of all-time. Weidman will need to follow Sonnen’s game plan from the first Silva-Sonnen fight to have any kind of success.
