By sticking and moving – and, more importantly, avoiding Roy Nelson’s overhand right – Stipe Miocic made a statement to the rest of the UFC’s heavyweight division Saturday night at UFC 161.
Miocic stopped the freight train of “Big Country,” earning a decision victory that was never in question.
The former college athletic standout rebounded from his first career loss, and may find his way into the Top-10 on the heels of the win.
“I have the best coaches in the world. My coaches make the best game plan for me and I felt confident every time coming in,” Miocic said. “I wobbled him in the early round, and then I thought: ‘I belong here’ and I kept going.”
Most felt Nelson would easily take out Miocic in the first round like he did Cheick Kongo earlier this year. Instead, the athletically-gifted Croatian scored several near-knockdowns and constantly was on the attack.
