Recently news surfaced that a bantamweight bout between Ivan Menjivar and Norifumi “Kid” Yamamoto was planned for UFC 165, and now the promotion’s Canadian twitter feed has confirmed the match-up. UFC 165 will go down on September 21st and will be hosted by Toronto, Ontario’s Air Canada Centre.

Yamamoto (18-6) will be fighting for his UFC roster spot, as the accomplished wrestler and powerful slugger has dropped consecutive bouts to Demetrious Johnson, Darren Uyenoyama and Vaughan Lee since signing with the promotion. The 36 year-old vet, who for some time was widely regarded to be one of the planet’s best P4P fighters, has gone 1-4 in his last five bouts.

Menjivar (25-10) may not be in a must win situation necessarily, but the Tristar fighter is coming off a submission loss to Urijah Faber at UFC 157 in February and has lost two of his last three bouts. At UFC 154 in November, the 31 year-old tapped out Azamat Gashimov with a nicely timed armbar, after falling by unanimous decision to Mike Easton at UFC 148 in July. The well rounded bantamweight has gone 4-2 to date in the UFC.

This bout has the potential to be something pretty fantastic no?

UFC 165 will be headlined by a light-heavyweight bout between champion Jon Jones and challenger Alexander Gustafsson. The only other fight that’s been confirmed for the card will feature Menjivar’s Tristar teammate Mike Ricci taking on undefeated lightweight Myles Jury.
