Ben Askren has lived up to the hype and then some since the decorated wrestler transitioned into MMA, and although he’s gone 12-0 to date and won the Bellator welterweight title, he has plenty of detractors who say his stifling top game isn’t exciting to watch. Since Askren has never shied away from confronting his critics, the Bellator champ likely isn’t the promotion’s most popular fighter either (despite being one of its best).

While speaking to Bleacher Report recently, “Funky” was asked about his polarizing nature, and had this to say:

“You’re either the heel or the face right? For me it’s really easy to be the heel,” Askren said. “Just like some stupid people think WWE is real, some people think that the persona I play is real as well and it’s easy enough to trick them. They love you or they hate you, but either way as long as they’re not neutral about you, they’ll turn your fight on. There’s a lot of people that tuned into Spike tonight to see me get knocked out.”

Of course, Askren is referring to his most recent win on Wednesday, when he dominated Andrey Koreshkov for three rounds and then stopped him in round four. The ridiculously talented grappler outstruck Koreshkov by a mind rattling count of 248-3…Now that is crazy. Since Askren could be entering free agency soon, the 29 year-old was asked how a scrap between himself and Georges St. Pierre would go. The champion stated:

“I think it would be a little more difficult,” Askren said “but something like (the Koreshkov fight).”

That should get people talking right? And as far as Askren’s contract status? Most observers expect that the welterweight will resign with Bellator.
