Chael Sonnen received a surprise message from the Massachusetts athletic commission regarding his fight Saturday night vs. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC Fight Night 26.

It seemed that there was some outrage against Sonnen competing on the Boston-based card because of previous run-ins with law enforcement.

However, Sonnen explained during a conference call that nothing came of it and he wasn’t bothered by the brief hearing.

“I got a text message the day of the hearing that was scheduled by the commission,” he recalled. “I didn’t know about it. I called in, I was there to answer questions and was on the phone for less than a minute. I was very happy the commission saw it that way (to allow him to fight).”

Sonnen was approved for the main event contest, and added that “it was something (the hearing) that could have caused me a great deal of stress had I known about it.”
