Steven Siler has put himself in position to compete with a contender in the UFC’s featherweight division.

Siler, just 26 years old, improved to 5-1 in his Octagon career by finishing former WEC champion Mike Brown Saturday night at UFC Fight Night: Shogun vs. Sonnen.

“This is a big, big win,” he said. “Not bad coming from a guy Dana White crossed off on the Ultimate Fighter and beating a former WEC champion.

“This is a huge, huge win; I understand how big it is to beat Mike Brown.”

Siler (23-10) was able to catch Brown coming in with a right hand that floored the veteran. He didn’t give Brown a chance to recover, jumping on top of him and landing a right that knocked him out cold.

Brown immediately protested the stoppage, but it was evident he was out. The second right Siler connected with appeared to revive him, and the winner said, “I knew it was over.”
