While making his way to the finals of The Ultimate Fighter, Kelvin Gastelum earned submission wins over Bubba McDaniel and Josh Samman.
In his welterweight debut Wednesday night at UFC Fight Night 27, Gastelum did it again, choking out Brian Melancon and earning his seventh career victory.
The 21-year-old defeated Uriah Hall to become the latest Ultimate Fighter winner, and has now won four fights via submission.
“I knew he had heavy hands, so I just wanted to get the finish,” Gastelum said. “I had to take advantage of him being rocked. I took his back and secured the lock.”
Gastelum (7-0) decided to move down to welterweight after competing at middleweight on the reality series, and made a statement by becoming the first fighter to finish Melancon in his career.
