Bellator MMA has announced the signing of former UFC heavyweight Lavar Johnson.

“Big” comes to the promotion after runs in both the UFC and Strikeforce. He was released following a second consecutive defeat at the hands of Brendan Schaub earlier this year.

Johnson (17-7) won his first two UFC fights, finishing both Joey Beltran and Pat Barry. He also lost to Stefan Struve via armbar in 2012.

According to a report by The MMA Report, Johnson will join fellow ex-UFC fighter Cheick Kongo in the upcoming heavyweight tournament, slated to start this fall. His suspension for a failed post-fight drug test has also expired.
