Erik Koch’s push to become a UFC champion will take him back to the lightweight ranks, according to his manager Mike Roberts.

Koch, who was recently defeated by Dustin Poirier at featherweight, has put his body through too much to get down to 145, Roberts told Bleacher Report.

“That cut for Erik is horrible,” he said. “It’s worse for anybody I’ve ever seen other than when James Irvin cut to 185.

“It’s literally taxing on his body. Erik is lean at 170 pounds walking around and I just think the cut is a little bit too much for him.”

Koch, just 24 years old, was scheduled to a shot at UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo before injuries scrapped the contest. Since, he has lost two straight, falling via TKO to Ricardo Lamas and decision to Poirier.
