Chael Sonnen takes his role as co-host of “UFC Tonight” very seriously.

Sonnen, a former contender to two UFC titles, was recently confronted by Wanderlei Silva during a public event. So, of course the “American Gangster” had to respond once he got in front of the FOX Sports 1 cameras.

“I’m all for him having a little fun. But a little advice: if you’re going to do a publicity stunt, do not bring your own camera, it looks staged. It insults your audience,” he said. “Accosting a gangster can be hazardous. If you want to have a conventional interview, we at UFC Tonight will pay your way to come on the show.”

It remains to be seen when, but you have to believe Sonnen and Silva will eventually collide inside the Octagon.

As for more “hosting” duties, Sonnen was asked his thoughts on the upcoming Jake Shields-Demian Maia contest. He’s previously fought Maia, and been a follower of Shields for quite some time.

“I’ve been in the ring with Demian Maia. He’s aggressive and his pressure is unbelievable. His takedowns are nothing short of effective. These guys are mirror images, they’re very close. Jake Shields is a brawler, but when it hits the ground he’s a true tactician,” he said. “I believe Jake Shields will have better position for the majority of the fight, and Shields wins a decision.”

Shields and Maia square off Wednesday from Brazil at UFC Fight Night 29.
