While Jake Shields has a long road ahead of him, in terms of securing another title shot, if he defeats Demian Maia at UFC FN 29 it will be a big step in that direction. After all, Maia is currently ranked #4 in the UFC’s welterweight ranks and is coming off wins over Rick Story, Dong Hyun Kim and Jon Fitch.
Shields has relayed he’s hoping to back into the title shot mix, where he was in 2011, when he lost by unanimous decision to Georges St. Pierre. Recently, Shields was also asked by MMA Junkie.com who he believes will win at UFC 167, when GSP puts his title on the line versus Johny Hendricks.
“St-Pierre vs. Hendricks is a good fight,” Shields said. “I think it’s a really exciting fight and one I want to watch. But ultimately, I think ‘GSP’ is so good at what he does. He’s such a smart fighter.”
“I think ‘GSP’ will end up using his distance, range – his standup – and end up taking Hendricks down and wearing him down and winning a tough fight.”
Interesting comments, particularly his call that GSP will be able to take the All-American wrestler down. If you’re curious, according to the oddsmakers, Hendricks is the underdog heading into November 16th fight in the +150 to +250 range.
UFC FN 29 will take place Wednesday, October 9th in Barueri, Sao Paulo, Brazil.
