UFC executive Marshall Zelaznik was left with an interesting decision to state after the promotion decided to not give Rousimar Palhares the “Submission of the Night” at UFC Fight Night 29 Wednesday.

Palhares appeared to remain locked in on a heel hook vs. Mike Pierce even after Pierce had tapped and the referee tried to break the hold.

“There’s been a bit of a history (with Palhares doing that),” Zelaznik said. “(UFC president) Dana (White) reacted strongly; the commission reacted strongly.

“We decided, in the betterment of judgement, (to not award the bonus). If the commission comes back, we could re-evaluate.”

Zelaznik added that the UFC holds clauses in the fighter contracts that could lead to even further punishment for Palhares, who won in his welterweight debut.
