Two straight wins – both of which were dominating performances – as left Cain Velasquez finished with Junior dos Santos.
Velasquez successfully finished dos Santos Saturday night at UFC 166, earning his second title defense.
“I think it’ll be done for a while,” said Velasquez, on the post-fight show, when asked about facing dos Santos again. “Maybe five years down the line we’ll fight again, but not right now.”
In the previous meeting, Velasquez controlled the action with his takedowns, claiming a decision victory. There was no need for the judges in this one, as the champion picked him apart on the feet and scored the TKO late in the fight.
Ever the student, Velasquez explained what he saw in film study that would allow him to have the upper-hand in the stand-up.
“In the second fight, we saw when he was backing up, we were throwing wild shots and missing,” he said. “But we tried to shorten them up and make them more direct and land more, which worked.”
Dos Santos won the first meeting, earning a knockout in the opening moments of the fight.
