Johnson Demolishes Benavidez

UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson destroyed Joseph Benavidez in tonight’s rematch at UFC on FOX 9. Johnson floored Benavidez with a vicious right hook and then quickly followed with multiple strikes before referee “Big” John McCarthy pulled Johnson off. The knockout victory was Johnson’s first since his 2010 bout with Jesse Brock.

Benavidez’s next challenge now awaits after winning his fifth consecutive fight in a row and making himself the front runner for “Fighter of the Year.” The champ is sure to pose problems for anyone he faces, as he has shown improved finishing ability in his last two defenses.

The loss is particuarly tough for Benavidez since it was a rematch of their UFC 152 matchup, meaning Benavidez is likely out of the title picture for the foreseeable future. The KO loss is the first of Benavidez’s career and snaps a three-fight win streak.

Rd. 1- Jabs by DJ early as JB lands a legkick and looks to charge. DJ is showing a lot of movement to setup takedowns but his first attempt comes up short. Solid outside legkick by JB lands. Headkick by JB. Hard hook by DJ knocks Benavidez to the floor and four follow-up strikes land before the Big John is able to react. Did not see that finish coming.

Result: Demetrious Johnson def. Joseph Benavidez via KO (punches) at 2:08 of Round 1

Referee: “Big” John McCarthy
