Former Strikeforce champion Jake Shields believes his body of work will be enough to push him towards another shot at the UFC welterweight title – if he can finish Hector Lombard.
The two meet next Saturday night from Dallas at UFC 171.
Shields (29-6-1) is unbeaten in his four fights, winning three and having one other victory changed to a no-contest after a failed post-fight drug test.
“I’m on a good win streak right now and I want to go out there (and) put Hector away,” said Shields, during a recent interview on MMAjunkie.com Radio. “I would be the first guy to do it and (hopefully) get a title shot.”
Lombard (33-4-1) finished Nate Marquardt last October, and as Shields stated, all four of his losses have come via decision – including two split decision losses inside the Octagon.
“I want to take him down (and) go for a submission,” he said. “I think if I can finish him, I can probably get a title shot.”
A new welterweight champion will be crowned that night, as Johny Hendricks squares off with Robbie Lawler in the main event. Two more 170-pound contenders, Carlos Condit and Tyron Woodley, are slated for the co-main that evening.
