Despite previous comments, Jose Aldo downplayed the rivalry talk between his Nova Uniao camp and Team Alpha Male.
Aldo, the reigning UFC featherweight champion, will defend his title against Chad Mendes in August at UFC 176. “Scarface” appeared on a recent episode of “UFC Tonight” to discuss the fight.
Recently, T.J. Dillashaw snapped the run of Nova Uniao over Team Alpha Male fighters, defeating Renan Barao for the bantamweight belt.
“I don’t believe there’s a rivalry,” Aldo said. “Both teams are great teams and there’s a more healthy rivalry between the teams.”
Aldo owns victories over Urijah Faber and Mendes, while Barao also defeated Faber twice.
In the previous meeting between Aldo and Mendes, the Brazilian excited his home fans by scoring a first round knockout with just a second left on the clock.
“I don’t see the fight going a different way,” he said. “He has his own characteristics and he’ll train to improve those. When push comes to shove, he’ll go back to what he thinks is safest for him.”
Aldo (24-1) has earned wins over Ricardo Lamas, Chan Sung Jung, Frankie Edgar and Kenny Florian since moving to the UFC from the WEC. He hasn’t lost since a 2005 submission defeat at the hands of Luciano Azevedo.
