Beneil Dariush is a native of Iran, a place where war continues to split the country. Saturday night, he put all that to the side and earned a submission victory over Tony Martin at UFC Fight Night 49.

Dariush (8-1) saw his perfect record come to an end earlier this year with a loss to Ramsey Nijem in Abu Dhabi, but he re-focused and got back at it vs. Martin.

“The fight picked up pace really fast, but I think that played in my favor,” he said. “I was getting tired, but I felt him getting tired and I used that to my advantage.”

The black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu moved from guard to side control with ease, slipping out of a guillotine from Martin to lock up his submission.

With the win, Dariush has now scored five submission wins, including a January first round rear-naked choke on Charlie Brenneman in his UFC debut.

Martin is now 8-2 and lost via submission for the first time in his career.
